This will be the first of many blog articles providing helpful tips on the use of modern technology in the music business.

Today’s topic: simplifying workflow utilizing AI stem splitting functionality

So what is stem splitting?

Stem splitting refers to the process of separating audio into individual components, hence the name stem. Common “splits’ for stems are usually vocals, bass, drums and other instruments.

And there are still others that will separate more elements. It really depend the final outcome for your music production project and the delivery requirements.

Here are some examples:

  • Logic Pro offers stem splitting for drums, bass guitar, vocals, and other instruments. So that means you end up with a separate drum track, bass guitar track, and vocal track and everything else. And for most use cases that might be OK.

  • Disco Music Management, a service used by music supervisors and composers and songwriters, provides an instrumental feature, which removes the vocals from a master recording. And in many cases, that’s all that’s needed

  • Lalala.ai takes it step further and can isolate up to 10 separate stems

Stem splitting can be beneficial in the mixing and mastering stage as it provides greater flexibility when producers need to isolate and edit specific elements of an audio recording.
